This is the Cover-Art for Drag Films up and coming new DVD, featuring The "Nationals" at Indy, 1966 and 1968. These films (original kinescopes)were first aired as the ABC "Wide world of Sports" broadcasts from 66 and 68. If you haven't seen Drag Films first release, featuring Indy 63, the Winternationals 66, and Mickey Thompson's "Gathering of Monsters" at Fonatana in 65, you need to treat yourselves to this one..A must have for any Drag Racing Buff.
As for the painting,,,"I really like this image, and especially the use of a fisheye point of veiw ..The original photo (a Bob Swaim image) I worked from, was somewhat overexposed, and slightly blurry, so it was fun to bring this scene back to life and into focus...We see in this painting, the first round race between the Ramchargers and what I'm told is one of the "Hawaiian" cars. (I'll find out for sure from Roland soon enough.) The Ramchargers took the win...I also think this is the way I liked Indy the best, the orange tower and the Hurst bridge, gave the place a pastoral setting...Not like today, with the barrage of Corporate signs and images, press suites and hospitality lounges...It's obvious in this scene, that the racing was still only about "Racing!" It wasn't about Championships, or Point chases, or Sponsor incentives, no one had a TV deal, or press people. Luckly for us, all the racers had, were the trailers to haul the cars to the race on...Lucky for us, these guys just wanted to race! I sure tried to capture the feel of the Indiana sun, and the vista of Indy itself.I hope I got close....The prints of this painting turned out AWEsome! These are printed on different paper then what we normally print on, this really brings out the deapth of this painting! I really enjoyed doing this art, I hope you enjoy it also....DCP
