Willy Hang On !
"Willy Hang On!"
The latest Painting from the Drag Racing Artist...... David Carl Peters
Limited-Edition Print of 500 (13x19) prints signed and numbered by the Artist.
Drag Racing is such a wonderful sport, but more than that, it's a true "American Art Form." Other sports have heroes, men that become memorable stars and go down in history, and that's also true with Drag Racing, with one exception. In the Golden Age of Drag Racing, the "Cars were the Stars!" and the subject of this painting is a perfect example of that.
I would rank the "Winged Express," in the "Top 10," if not the "Top 5" in the "All-time Iconic Figures" in Drag Racing. Some cars don't just "set the standard," they are the standard.
The 'Winged Express" was built in 1964 by Nick Harrell, Phil Johnson, and John Muse, with Willy Borsch at the controls. The car was continually upgraded raced for the next 4 1/2 years until a new car was built in 69.
After 1965, the car was sold to "Mousie" Marcellus, and the team of "Marcellus & Borsch" was born, and the rest is history.
In this image, find "Wild Willy" just moments before the car gets out of control, forcing him to shut-off, and loose his debut race at the 1968 US. Nationals, to a very happy Gabby Bleeker.
Anyone who was lucky enough to see him race, knew how Borsch got his nickname. Here "Wild Willy," famous for hanging on to the side of the car to brace himself during pass, almost turns the (96" wheelbase) car on its side, as it's raw horsepower literally boils the massive rear slicks.
I hope you enjoy my painting of the Winged Express. The question is; Will he hang on?
Remember, this is a print of David's original airbrush painting.
